Houston’s largest convention center is undergoing a massive transformation. The George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston is at the center of a $2 billion renovation plan ahead of the city hosting 2026 FIFA World Cup matches and the 2028 Republican National Convention. The plan, unveiled by Houston Mayor John Whitmire and Houston First Corporation, has three planned phases and will mark the center’s first renovation since 2026.

New Caney Will be Home to Texas’ 7th Largest Convention Center
In a state known for making things bigger and better, the Houston area is getting a new convention center. The new building, part of the entertainment district at Valley Ranch town center, is projected to be the state’s 7th largest convention center. Once completed, the new center will be larger than Dallas Market Center which takes up more than 200,000 square feet. At 210,000 square feet, it will take its place among the largest in the area, behind NRG Center and George R. Brown. Construction is expected to take around 18 months beginning in January 2025.
