In 2020-2021, Innovative Environments (IE) worked with Gensler on the ION Building, the 266,000-square foot reimagined Sears building in mid-town Houston. The Ion fosters a community and culture where corporate innovators, academic partners, community partners, startups, and entrepreneurs come together to solve some of the world’s greatest problems. As such, the look and feel of the building needed to embrace the innovative culture.
IE was engaged to create truly unique signage while addressing some interesting graphical challenges. For instance, custom wallpaper was created with a metallic look that used an automotive finish and used the negative space (or area with no printing on it) to allow the wall’s raw material to show through. This custom wallpaper was carefully aligned throughout a 4-5 floor stairwell.
The ION Building has received strong support locally including that of Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and has been featured in national publications such as FastCompany.
